How to Optimize Mobile Apps for App Stores: 6 ASO Tips for Better Rankings

Creating a mobile application is the first step, but it’s not enough. You must optimize your mobile app for more visibility on app stores like apple app store and google play. In this blog post, we’ll walk you through some ASO tips. ASO means app store optimization, it is enhancing your mobile app’s visibility and making it rank higher in app stores.

1. App title and subtitle:

The first thing a user sees is your app title, so it’s important to write a title that is short, clear, simple, and most importantly, appealing for users. Your app’s title determines your app’s relevance to the search query.

An app title should contain the primary or focus keywords of the app and it must be like something someone could write in the search bar.

For example, a fitness tracking app could use ‘Fitness tracker’ or ‘30-day fitness’ as its title. A title is limited to specific characters, apple allows up to 30 characters and google allows 50.

Make sure your title fits within the character limit and well explains your mobile app

On the other hand, the subtitle appears under the title in app stores. It gives you a chance to add more keywords that users could potentially search for.

2. Your app’s keywords

ASO or app store optimization needs your business to identify the right keywords to your mobile app that users are more likely to write in their search query, just like the website’s SEO.

The keywords could be anything related to your app, ranging from your app’s function, target audience, a problem your app solves, and more.

Use keywords research tools to know more keywords (high-volume keywords) and relevant ones that you can rank for.

It is also important to not overuse or overstuff your description with keywords. An important tip you should follow is to constantly update your keywords to remain relevant and attract the right audience.

3. Include visual material

Visual content is extremely important in attracting new users. It should showcase your mobile app and highlight its features. Also, it helps your users understand the value of your app and whether it will be of good use to them or not.

Include appealing visuals and engaging app demo videos that summarize your app’s features and usage to the user and encourage them to take the action, which is to download the app.

4. Showcase good reviews and ratings

Reviews are a huge contributor to grabbing user’s attention and retaining them, as a high percentage of people tend to get influenced and act based on reviews and ratings

A user’s rating and review on app stores reflects the app’s quality and gives you credibility. The more positive reviews you have, the higher you will rank in the app store.
Encourage current satisfied users to leave a positive review through a pop-up notification that appears on their screen saying ‘Are you enjoying the app? Share your feedback with a quick review’

5. Choose the right app category:

When you choose the right category for your app, it will get listed with other similar apps and will be easier for users to find.

For example: A fitness tracking app could fit under ‘Health and Fitness‘ category rather than ‘games’ category and a language learning app could fit under ‘education’ category.

6. Track the performance through app store analytics

Apple’s app store and google play both offer analytic tools where you can track your app’s performance. The metric it tracks is user retention, download rates, and Click-through rates (CTR) to give an insight into the app’s visiility and the user’s engagement with it.

Use it to guide you to continue optimizing your app. For example, if you detect any bounce rate, you can revisit your visuals to adjust them and make them more appealing to improve and maintain your performance and rankings.

Overall mistakes to avoid:

  • Don’t overstuff your title, subtitles, and descriptions with keywords, it can generate a negative outcome.

  • Don’t use poor visuals

  • Don’t ignore negative reviews, instead respond to it and keep enhancing your performance.

Insights for the future:

As technology evolves and continues to evolve every day, some technologies like voice search, image search, AI search suggestion recommendations, and app localization are becoming an essential part of mobile applications.

Localizaition means translating your app’s title, subtitle, and description to target international markets and expand your user base.

Conclusion:

Optimizing the app store is an important step that you have to keep constantly doing for your app and continue to adjust. Follow these tips to improve your ranking and generate more downloads or contact us for a free consultation!
